How Does the IPL 2026 Points System Work?
Understanding the points system is essential for following the standings throughout the season.
✅ Win — 2 points
❌ Loss — 0 points
🌧 No Result (rain) — 1 point each team
🤝 Tie — 1 point each team (Super Over used if knockout stage)
Teams are ranked first by total points. If two or more teams finish level on points, Net Run Rate (NRR) is used as the tiebreaker. In very rare cases where NRR is also equal, head-to-head results between the tied teams are used.
What Is NRR and How Is It Calculated?
NRR stands for Net Run Rate. It is the most important tiebreaker in IPL standings and can decide whether a team makes the playoffs even after finishing equal on points with another team.
NRR Formula
NRR = (Total runs scored ÷ Total overs faced) − (Total runs conceded ÷ Total overs bowled)
In simple terms — the more runs you score quickly and the fewer runs you concede, the better your NRR.
NRR Example
If your team scores 180 in 20 overs and bowls the opposition out for 140 in 18 overs:
🏏 Your run rate — 180 ÷ 20 = 9.00
🎯 Opposition run rate — 140 ÷ 18 = 7.77
📊 Your NRR for that match — +1.23
A positive NRR means you are scoring faster than you are conceding. A negative NRR means the opposite. Teams aim to win matches by big margins early in the season to build a strong NRR buffer.
IPL 2026 Playoff Qualification — How It Works
After all 84 league stage matches are completed, the top 4 teams in the points table qualify for the playoffs. Here is exactly what happens:
🟢 1st Place — Plays Qualifier 1 (one win away from the Final)
🟢 2nd Place — Plays Qualifier 1 (one win away from the Final)
🟡 3rd Place — Plays Eliminator (must win to stay alive)
🟡 4th Place — Plays Eliminator (must win to stay alive)
🔴 5th to 10th Place — Eliminated from the tournament
Playoffs Format
🏏 Qualifier 1 — 1st vs 2nd — winner goes directly to the Final
🏏 Eliminator — 3rd vs 4th — loser is eliminated
🏏 Qualifier 2 — Loser of Q1 vs Winner of Eliminator — winner goes to Final
🏆 Final — May 31, 2026 — M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru
The top two teams get two chances to reach the final — a major advantage over 3rd and 4th place teams, who only get one chance.

IPL 2026 Team-by-Team Playoff Chances
Based on squad strength, auction results and recent form, here is a pre-tournament assessment of each team's chances of finishing in the top 4:
Strong Favourites (Top 4 very likely)
🔵 Gujarat Titans — Most balanced squad on paper. Shubman Gill, Jos Buttler, Rashid Khan, Kagiso Rabada, Mohammed Siraj. No obvious weakness in any department.
🔴 Royal Challengers Bengaluru — Defending champions with their core squad intact. Virat Kohli in a title defence is a dangerous proposition for every other team.
🔵 Mumbai Indians — Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya is as strong a core four as any team. Quinton de Kock for ₹1 crore is the steal of the auction.
🟠 Sunrisers Hyderabad — Travis Head and Heinrich Klaasen is the most destructive T20 opening pair in the world. Their batting depth is frightening.
Dark Horses (Capable of Top 4)
🩵 Lucknow Super Giants — Rishabh Pant as captain changes everything. His energy and unpredictability make LSG a genuine threat.
🟡 Chennai Super Kings — The Sanju Samson trade is the deal of the IPL 2026 cycle. MS Dhoni's experience adds an unquantifiable edge.
🟣 Kolkata Knight Riders — If Cameron Green is fully fit, KKR have a genuine match-winner. Matheesha Pathirana at death is unplayable on his day.
🩷 Rajasthan Royals — Yashasvi Jaiswal is in the form of his life. Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran from the CSK trade are proven performers.
Must Improve from 2025
🔴 Punjab Kings — Lost the final in 2025 but lost Shreyas Iyer in the process. Rebuilding under new leadership.
🔵 Delhi Capitals — KL Rahul, Axar Patel and Mitchell Starc is a strong core but DC have underperformed in recent seasons and need consistency.
